DJing the 3 on 3 all styles battle! This will be my first time DJing an all-styles battle in LA. So if you are wondering what I will be playing during the battles, I am going to play just that; music for ALL-STYLES. Not just random music. Kind of weird to see DJs play the most random music for a battle (Katy Perry? Biz Markie’s Just a Friend?! SLOW JAMS??). I’m all for testing the dancers, but at least play tracks for the dancers TO BATTLE. I guess songs like those may be entertaining for the crowd, but let’s not forget about our dancers! Keep the club songs in the club, and keep the pop songs for your own guilty pleasures. Just to get an idea of what sounds you will hear:
1. MUSIC for DANCERS. (Street Dance Styles specifically. Popping, Locking, House, Hip-Hop)
2. Assuming, the format is head to head. I am going to switch the song after each team’s round. So basically each team will get one turn at each song. So just think, 3 songs per battle. So choose who gets to go out to each song wisely. If your team went out the first round, and then the 2nd team went out to that same song, don’t just jump in for your second round and dance to that song again. The song is going to change.
3. Tie Breaker songs: Expect THIS to be the random selection, but be sure that these tracks are still danceable for battles. I’ll most likely use tracks that will test a team’s versatility, musicality, and ability to hang outside of their own comfort zone. And by comfort zone, I am talking about dance style. If you are a locker, I want to see how you will do to a Hip-Hop track. I won’t throw on Teach Me How to Dougie, don’t worry. Sounds dumb right? Believe me, I’ve seen DJs play it at “battles”.
Cool?
They still haven’t posted what the winners of the 3on3 battle get. Hopefully it’s a good amount of cash. Also found some info from the www.urbanstreetjam.com website
